Alappuzha, Kerala

Have you ever experienced moments of contemplation, where you let go of everything? The deadlines at work, the financial worries, the pressure to have life figured out, the constant urge to check social media – all those thoughts that occupy your mind and push you towards one action or another. Imagine letting go of it all and simply "Be." If this seems like a distant dream and such moments are rare occurrences in your life, then Alleppey is the place to be.

Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, is a town located in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is renowned for its scenic backwaters, tranquil lagoons, and picturesque canals, earning it the title of the "Venice of the East." It also has beaches dotted with shacks and cafes in the alleys running across the seashore. All of it makes Allepy a perfect place for a laid back vacation that you must take once a while to reset and recharge.

I had initially planned to explore Idukki, but then the idea of a stopover in Alleppey crossed my mind, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to experience a boat ride in its mesmerizing backwaters. It was a short detour from Kochi, but one that I knew would be worth it.

The journey from Kochi to Alleppey usually takes around 2 hours by road, although traffic conditions can affect the travel time. I arrived in Alleppey, just in time to witness the beautiful sunset on its beach. My accommodation was conveniently located on the lane adjacent to the beach, right across from the renowned Catamaran restaurant. After battling the traffic and the weariness from prior travels, the chance to unwind on the balcony of Catamaran, with a stunning sunset painting the sky, was exactly the rejuvenating moment I had been longing for the whole day. Following the sunset, we checked into our hostel, freshened up, and decided to explore the alleys surrounding the Alleppey beaches.
These alleys were lined with cozy cafes and small, homely restaurants run by the locals. We opted for an early dinner at a delightful restaurant-cum-shack right on the beach, enjoying the sea breeze and savoring the homely food. With excitement brimming within me, I retired early to ensure I would be well-rested and ready for the morning boat ride—a highly anticipated highlight of my visit to Alleppey.

In the early hours of the morning, we reached Punnamada fishing point, the starting point for our boat ride. The serene ambiance, gentle breeze and crowd free tranquil waters make morning boat rides in Alleppey a preferred choice. The allure of the backwaters lies in their countless small canals, narrow passages, serene lakes, and beautiful villages creating an unparalleled and unforgettable experience.

As the boat glides slowly through the waterways, your mind naturally calms down. You'll pass through picturesque canals, serene lakes, charming villages, and lush green paddy fields. The symphony of birdsong, the soothing touch of the cool breeze, the shade of palm trees lining the shores and the distant sound of temple bells on the leveled wetlands all work together to soothe your senses. In these moments, you effortlessly let go of everything and immerse yourself in the sheer beauty of the surroundings, with every breath of fresh air caressing your being. Time seems to slow down, allowing you to simply "Be" with the nature.

The boat ride of three to four-hour immerses you in the diverse flora and fauna of Alleppey's backwaters. The places that you can explore depends on the duration of the boat ride and for Alleppey,  the more the merrier it gets.
